Orthodontic treatment
In Belgium, orthodontic treatment is eligible for two types of financial support, both of which are paid by your health insurance provider.
Dr Elena Roig Farga — INAMI 3-00607-93-007
The suffix -007 guarantees both the specialist quality of care and full access to statutory INAMI reimbursements for orthodontics. It is one of the rarest and most demanding qualifications in Belgium.
· Type 1 ·
Statutory reimbursement (INAMI)
A flat-rate amount, set by the State, which is the same for all health insurance schemes. It depends on the patient’s age and the treatment provided.
· Type 2 ·
Supplementary cover
Varies depending on the health insurance provider chosen and any optional dental cover taken out. It is in addition to statutory cover for children and also applies to adults.
· Statutory reimbursement based on the patient’s age ·
Under 9 years of age
First-line cover
Your health insurance provider pays a specific benefit known as the ‘first-line’ benefit, designed to encourage early orthodontic treatment. This benefit is intended for interceptive and orthopaedic treatments carried out before the child reaches the age of 9.
Combined treatment possible: under certain conditions, this procedure can be combined with the standard treatment, which begins at a later stage – at least 12 months after the end of this first phase, and before the patient reaches the age of 15. Dr Roig will assist you in planning these steps.
Aged between 9 and 15
The main window for statutory INAMI treatment
Statutory cover is provided for standard orthodontic treatment commenced within this age range. It covers the main procedures involved in active treatment as set out in the INAMI nomenclature.
Essential condition: the treatment notification must be submitted to the health insurance provider before the patient’s 15th birthday. Once this age has been reached without prior notification, statutory cover is no longer available. Our team will assist you with this administrative process.
After the age of 15 (without prior notification)
Statutory cover ceases for active treatment
If no notification has been submitted before the age of 15, statutory INAMI cover is no longer available for active orthodontic treatment. Only a few specific procedures remain covered: the initial consultation, certain X-rays and diagnostic examinations.
This does not mean that adult orthodontic treatment is not eligible for any reimbursement; supplementary cover from your mutual insurance scheme and any private insurance policies you may have may take over, sometimes to a significant extent depending on your policy.
Patients covered by international insurance: the JSIS/RCAM schemes (European Commission), NATO, and most international private insurers provide cover for adults. Please bring the details of your policy with you to the initial consultation.
Supplementary cover
In addition to statutory cover, most health insurance providers offer supplementary benefits, including for adults, through their supplementary insurance or optional policies.
- Dentalia+
- Dento+
- Optio Dentis
- Denta Plus
- And other optional policies
The amounts vary depending on the provider and the policy taken out, the length of membership, the patient’s age and the type of treatment. This information is provided for guidance only; please check directly with your health insurance provider.
